The Fundamentals: Imaging Systems: Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy

This module is designed to provide a basic understanding of how fluoroscopy systems create images, and how these systems can be used to guide interventions. It will also discuss basic principles of radiation safety with respect to fluoroscopy.

Module Components

Interactive Activity:

  • Fluoroscopy

Articles:

  • Occupational Radiation Protection in Interventional Radiology: A Joint Guideline of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe and the Society of Interventional Radiology by Miller DL, Vano E, Bartal G, Balter S, Dixon R, Padovani R, Schueler B, Cardella JF and de Baere T.
  • Guidelines for Patient Radiation Dose Management by Stecker MS, Balter S, Towbin RB, Miller DL, Vano E, Bartal G, Angle JF, Chao CP, Cohen AM, Dixon RG, Gross K, Hartnell GG, Schueler B, Statler JD, de Baere T, and Cardella JF.
  • Radiation Safety in Pediatric Interventional Radiology by Sidhu M, Strauss KJ, Connolly B, Yoshizumi TT, Racadio J, Coley BD, Utley T and Goske MJ.
  • Radiation Management for Interventions Using Fluoroscopic or Computed Tomographic Guidance during Pregnancy by Dauer LT, Thornton RH, Miller DL, Damilakis J, Dixon RG, Marx V, Schueler BA, Vano E, Venkatesan A, Bartal G, Tsetis D and Cardella JF.
  • Contrast Media: Issues for the Interventionalist by Soulen MC.

Expected completion time: 3 hours

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the basic components of a fluoroscopy system and how they produce an image.
  • Understand how modifying various parameters can affect fluoroscopy image quality and patient radiation dose.
  • Describe various methods of limiting patient and operator radiation dose during fluoroscopy, including special considerations for pediatric and pregnant patients.
  • Describe special operating modes of fluoroscopy systems (such as cone-beam CT).
  • Understand the role of contrast agents in fluoroscopic procedures, and describe the risks associated with these agents.
